Referral
A new client who comes to you because an existing client recommended you.
A referral is a new client acquired through the recommendation of an existing one, whether spontaneously by word of mouth or through a structured referral program that rewards the referrer. It is the highest-quality acquisition channel in beauty because it arrives pre-trusted: the newcomer already has a friend's endorsement, so they book faster and stay longer.
Referrals are not a nice-to-have, they are the leading way clients choose where to book. Nearly half of consumers, 47%, pick a salon or spa based on a referral from a friend or family member, ahead of every other channel. That makes your happiest existing clients your most effective marketing team, and it makes retention and referral a virtuous loop: the longer clients stay and the higher their Client Retention Rate, the more people they refer. Referrals are also cheap relative to paid acquisition, which otherwise costs five to 25 times more than retaining a client.
A referral program overlaps with a Loyalty Program (rewarding the existing client) and works hand in hand with your online reputation, since a referred client will still check your reviews before booking. Structure and track referrals in a client CRM, prompt them over email and SMS marketing, and reinforce them with social proof through social content.
